An investigation into alleged counterfeit-money purchases at stores across Durham Region has led to charges against a 19-year-old Toronto man, Durham Regional Police Service said.

Police allege the suspect bought merchandise using counterfeit money between February and April 2026, then took the items to similar stores and returned them for genuine cash.

The police release describes incidents at several stores in Durham Region but does not identify the businesses or specify whether any were in Ajax.

Investigators identified the suspect with help from information supplied through a Help Solve a Crime post, according to police. He was taken into custody in Pickering on Tuesday, Sept. 29, 2026.

Nikhil Sameer Telang, 19, of Toronto, is charged with five counts of fraud under $5,000, five counts of uttering counterfeit money and one count of possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000.

Police thanked members of the public for providing information that helped lead to the arrest. The release does not provide details about the information received or the value of the merchandise involved.
