Streetcar riders, drivers and cyclists who use Spadina Avenue should plan for three days of disruption next week as the TTC carries out essential track maintenance along the corridor.

According to a TTC construction notice, crews will perform track repairs, rail grinding and drainage maintenance at three locations along the Spadina Avenue streetcar lanes — the centre lanes of the roadway — starting as early as Monday, Oct. 19 and continuing until Wednesday, Oct. 21.

The transit agency said service on the affected route will be impacted from 4 a.m. on Oct. 19 until 11 p.m. on Oct. 21, a window that covers the bulk of the work on the right-of-way.

Night work also planned

Rail grinding will run on a separate overnight schedule, from 11 p.m. on Oct. 19 to 4 a.m. on Oct. 21, meaning crews will be active on the corridor both day and night during the repair period.

The TTC said the work is part of its ongoing streetcar track maintenance and state-of-good-repair program. The goal is to keep the streetcar network safe and reliable, improve drainage along the right-of-way and extend the life of the existing infrastructure.

The transit agency acknowledged that some noise is expected while crews are on site, but said efforts will be made to minimize the impact on the surrounding neighbourhood.

What the TTC is saying

"This work is required to maintain safe and reliable streetcar infrastructure, improve drainage, and extend the service life of the streetcar network," the TTC said in its notice.

"Thank you for your patience as we work to improve transit infrastructure in Toronto," the notice added.

The advisory flags impacts for motorists, cyclists and pedestrians as well as transit users, though the notice does not detail specific detours or lane closures. Riders who rely on the 510 Spadina route should watch for further service updates before travelling during the three-day window.

Residents and commuters with questions about the project can contact the TTC's community liaison for the work, Justin Valmores, Senior Community Liaison Officer, at 437-232-1548 or by email at justin.valmores@ttc.ca.

The maintenance marks the latest in a series of state-of-good-repair projects the TTC has scheduled across its streetcar network, as the agency works to keep aging track infrastructure in working order.
