Two people are dead after a shooting in the parking lot of an east-end Toronto hospital Monday afternoon, and police say the victims are believed to have been married.
Officers were called to the area of Warden Avenue and St. Clair Avenue East around 12:30 p.m. and found a man and a woman with gunshot wounds, according to Toronto police. Both were pronounced dead.
The shooting took place outside Providence Healthcare, a hospital in the city's east end. Duty senior officer Scott Shutt said the woman was a patient at the hospital.
Investigated as a homicide
Shutt said the case is being investigated as a homicide. There have been no arrests, and there are no outstanding suspects.
Investigators are asking anyone with information about the shooting to contact police.
Shutt also urged people who were near the hospital at the time to seek support, saying witnesses may have been affected by what they saw.
It happened behind me here in a large parking lot, numerous people would have been aware of it happening after the fact so I encourage people to reach out because it is a traumatic incident that occurred, he said in a news conference outside the hospital.
Hospital campus secure
Unity Health Toronto, which operates Providence Healthcare, said in a statement that the hospital campus is secure and that appointments booked for Tuesday will go ahead as scheduled.
TorontoToday reported that police have not released the identities of the two victims or a possible motive, and investigators remained at the scene Monday evening.
