Markham residents can take part in two free Study Hall gatherings at Varley Art Gallery this fall, with sessions scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 17, and Saturday, Nov. 14, 2026.
Both begin at 2 p.m. Eastern time, and participants do not need to register, according to the Varley Art Gallery’s program listing.
Presented as part of I Think This Means I Can Fly, the program will explore mythology, movement, disobedience, refusal and dreaming. Poems, essays, films, embodied practice and conversation are among the ways participants will engage with those themes.
The gallery describes the gatherings as opportunities for shared discussion and inquiry. Rather than focusing only on reading or formal instruction, the program draws on Fred Moten’s understanding of study as something continuous and rooted in lived experience.
That approach treats everyday activities — including talking, walking, working, dancing, suffering and gathering — as ways to explore ideas collectively. The sessions are intended to provide an intimate setting where participants can ask questions, exchange perspectives and make discoveries.
Study Hall has two connected functions within the program: a collection of resources and a place for critical exchange. The readings, films and other forms of practice provide material for the conversations that take place at each gathering.
The gallery names Evelyn Amponsah, Tender Possibilities and artist Anique Jordan as hosts of the monthly gatherings.
The October and November dates give residents two opportunities to participate in the free program, which brings its themes into discussion through both creative material and shared activity.
