Wasaga Beach is raising Beach Drive by roughly five feet — about 1.5 metres — as part of a major rebuild designed to end the repeated flooding that has long damaged the road during high water events on Georgian Bay.
According to a construction update from the Town of Wasaga Beach published Oct. 16, the chronic flooding has disrupted businesses and tourism and cut off access to the beachfront corridor. The rebuild is meant to fix that for good.
Why the road matters
Beach Drive and the surrounding Beach Area 1 commercial strip form the main economic corridor for the town's tourism and business activity, the Town said. The upgrade is already attracting new investment aimed at diversifying the local economy, growing tourism, creating jobs and expanding the commercial tax base.
The project aligns with the town's Destination Wasaga vision and its Downtown Redevelopment Master Plan. By reducing flood risk, the Town expects the area to become more attractive for private development similar to Blue Mountain's village — including mixed-use buildings, hotels, commercial space and new housing. The stated goal is to make Beach Area 1 a year-round hub that is sustainable beyond the short summer season.
The province is contributing about $10.9 million toward the upgrade under infrastructure and housing enabling programs.
What's changing this construction season
Along with the higher road, the redesign includes updated infrastructure, improved public spaces, better accessibility, safety improvements and closer integration with surrounding commercial and community uses.
Motorists are being asked to slow down and get familiar with new road closures and traffic control measures. Pedestrians should stay out of fenced-off work areas; "Sidewalk Closed" signage will mark sections that are off limits, and the Town says crews have kept as much sidewalk open as possible.
Impact on homes, parking and services
Where work crosses driveways or business entrances, temporary access changes may be needed, with advance notice provided. Emergency vehicle access will be maintained at all times.
Due to the work zone in the municipal parking lot off Spruce Street, some accessible parking spaces will be unavailable. The Town says other accessible spaces are available in municipal lots, including at 3rd Street, and residents with mobility limitations can contact the project team about specific needs.
Telephone, hydro, cable, sewer and gas services are not expected to be affected. Residents will be notified ahead of any planned water interruptions, and the contractor has committed to restoring any unplanned outages as quickly as possible.
If construction blocks regular pickup, the contractor will move labelled garbage and recycling bins from driveway ends to the edge of the work site on collection days. Bins must be out by 7 a.m.
Tatham Engineering is administering the project for the Town, with Arnott Construction Ltd. as the contractor. Construction notices are posted on the Town's Beachfront Construction Notices webpage and available by email request. Residents with questions can contact the Town's project coordinator, Mark Taylor, at 705-429-2540 ext. 2337 or mark.taylor@wasagabeach.com.
