A 61-year-old woman has died after a two-vehicle collision near Woodbine Avenue and Highway 407 in Markham on Tuesday afternoon, York Regional Police say.

Police were called to the area at about 2:15 p.m. on Feb. 3. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

York Regional Police first alerted the public to the crash on social media shortly after it happened, posting that Woodbine Avenue was closed for a fatal collision, that an adult woman had been pronounced dead and that the Major Collision Unit was investigating. Early reports did not say whether anyone else had been hurt.

What police say happened

According to police, a white Dodge Ram ProMaster came off the eastbound Highway 407 off-ramp and collided with a blue Toyota RAV4 that was travelling north on Woodbine Avenue. The driver of the Dodge stayed at the scene and was not injured.

No charges have been laid, and police said the collision remains under investigation. The York Regional Police Major Collision Investigations Unit is leading the case and has not said what caused the crash, or which vehicle the woman was in.

Roads closed for hours

Woodbine Avenue was closed between Miller Avenue and Yorktech Drive while investigators worked at the scene, and police asked people to avoid the area. Ontario Provincial Police said all four Highway 407 ramps at Woodbine Avenue were also shut, and urged drivers to find another route. The ramps have since reopened.

Police appeal for witnesses

Police are asking anyone with information about the collision to contact the Major Collision Investigations Unit at 905-895-1221, extension 7704.

Police have not released the woman's name.
