High school students in Markham who will need mental health, learning or physical supports after graduation have a chance next month to ask colleges and universities directly how that help works.
The York Catholic District School Board and the York Region District School Board said in a Feb. 12 notice that they will jointly host a Post-Secondary Education Accessibility Fair. Both boards run schools across Markham, and the event is aimed at students and families looking for information on getting supports at a college, a university or in a skilled trade.
Who will be there
The boards said staff from admissions, recruitment, accessibility and student support offices will be on hand. The list of schools taking part includes:
Universities: University of Toronto, Waterloo, Guelph, McMaster, Western, Laurier, York and Toronto Metropolitan University
Colleges and polytechnics: Seneca, Humber, Centennial, George Brown, Durham and Georgian
Skilled trades: Skilled Trades Ontario
The Regional Assessment and Resource Centre will also present a session on how accessibility services help students succeed after high school.
Why it matters
Planning for disability supports after high school can involve paperwork and deadlines that differ from school to school. A single evening with many institutions in one room lets families compare how each one handles requests before applications and acceptances are settled.
York University, one of the participating schools, has a campus in downtown Markham, giving local students one option close to home.
