York Regional Police are asking for the public's help identifying two men who stole a wallet from a woman's purse while she dined on a Markham restaurant patio last month — and investigators have now released surveillance video of the theft.

The theft took place on September 25 at a restaurant in the area of Highway 7 East and Woodbine Avenue, according to York Regional Police.

Police say the two suspects deliberately sat down behind the victim. Surveillance footage shows one of them reaching into her purse, which was hanging off the back of her chair, and removing her wallet.

What the video shows

According to police, the suspects are white men. In the video, they are wearing baseball caps — one bearing the Vegas Golden Knights logo and the other a Toronto Maple Leafs cap.

The video footage of the incident was released this week, roughly two weeks after the theft occurred, The Post Millennial reported.

Police warn of distraction thefts

Investigators have warned Markham residents to remain vigilant and take steps to protect themselves from distraction thefts, which have been a recurring concern in the city.

Police are hoping that, with the public's assistance, the two men can be identified and caught quickly.

Anyone who recognizes the suspects, or who has information about the incident, is encouraged to contact York Regional Police. Tips can also be provided anonymously through Crime Stoppers.

Residents dining out are reminded to keep purses and bags closed and secured, and within sight, rather than hanging them on the back of chairs where they can be targeted from behind.
