The Amsterdam Bridge is set to reopen on Toronto's waterfront this weekend, more than five decades after the Dutch city gave it to Toronto as a gift.

The City of Toronto will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Sunday, May 31, joined by representatives from CreateTO and Harbourfront Centre, according to a City of Toronto media advisory.

The event will take place on the east side of the Amsterdam Bridge. Remarks will be followed by the ribbon cutting and the first official walk across the bridge, with speakers and partners available for interviews afterward.

The steel cable footbridge was originally gifted to Toronto by the Mayor of Amsterdam in 1974. It has since undergone a comprehensive rehabilitation so it can safely reopen to the public, the City said.

Members of the media who wish to attend are asked to confirm by Saturday, May 30 at noon.

The bridge sits along Toronto's waterfront, an area the City promotes as part of a community of more than three million residents that makes Toronto Canada's leading economic engine and one of the world's most diverse and livable cities.
