Markham residents can try creating art with needle and thread at a free July 18 workshop at the Varley Art Gallery. Exhibiting artist Par Nair will lead the three-hour session, which welcomes participants of all skill levels.

Markham Review reported that the hands-on program will give participants an opportunity to make a small, hand-stitched artwork. All necessary materials will be supplied, but participants must register in advance.

The workshop draws connections between embroidery, painting and mark-making. Rather than using thread only to reproduce a set design, the program treats stitching as a way to make expressive gestures, with needle and thread taking on a role similar to a brush and paint.

Nair will introduce a floating embroidery technique that leaves room for experimentation and individual interpretation. Participants will work without a fixed pattern, exploring a fluid approach to their stitches and compositions.

Abstract imagery from the gallery’s current exhibitions will provide a starting point for the work. During the session, participants will respond to that imagery while trying intuitive ways of working with thread.

The emphasis is on exploring the medium rather than following a prescribed design. The program is open to beginners as well as those who already have experience with embroidery.

Admission is free, with advance registration required for the July 18 session. Registration and more information about Nair are available through the gallery’s website, varleyartgallery.ca.
