The former Highland Farms building near Hurontario Street and Matheson Boulevard is getting a second life as a grocery store. JDass Corp, the Vaughan-based company that bought the property, is redeveloping it into a full-scale supermarket and expects to open this spring.

The store at 50 Matheson Blvd. E. will stock a wide range of products aimed at Mississauga's many cultural communities, according to the company. It expects to draw shoppers from the surrounding neighbourhoods as well as commuters and families from Brampton, just up the Hurontario corridor.

A big site on a busy corridor

JDass Corp announced the purchase in January. The company says the building covers about 176,000 square feet on a 13.88-acre lot, with close to 700 feet of frontage along Hurontario Street and five access points.

The site also sits on the route of the Hurontario LRT, the light rail line now under construction between Port Credit and Brampton. That puts the future store within easy reach of transit once the line opens, as well as close to nearby highways.

A name for the store and an exact opening date have not been announced.

Second grocery venture for the company

The Mississauga location will be JDass Corp's second supermarket, after Food World Supermarket in Toronto. The family-owned company, founded in 1986, works in metals, construction, real estate and hospitality, and already has a strong Mississauga presence: its holdings include the Mississauga Convention Centre and the Meadowvale Apartment Hotel.

The business is now led by the second generation of the Dass family, including managing directors Navjot Dass and Ram Dass.

Jobs on offer

The company is hiring for a range of positions at the new store ahead of the opening. It is asking interested candidates to send applications to info@dass.ca.

For residents in the Hurontario and Eglinton area, the opening would return a major grocery option to a building that has long been a neighbourhood shopping stop.
