Mississauga City Council has endorsed a plan to prepare the city to take over waste collection services from the Region of Peel on October 1, 2027, as part of a package of decisions made at its meeting on May 27.
The plan is intended to keep curbside collection running smoothly for residents through the transition, according to a City of Mississauga news release. The move sets the timeline for Mississauga to assume responsibility for a service the region has delivered locally.
What else council approved
Council approved a motion to waive new boat launch fees for the Port Credit Yacht Club. The decision spares the club from fees the city had recently introduced for boat launches.
Council also approved funding to support local concerts and live music events across Mississauga in 2026. The city says the money will back performances and music programming throughout the year.
On governance, council endorsed a plan to begin hiring a new Integrity Commissioner, the official responsible for overseeing ethical conduct at City Hall. The role covers matters such as the conduct of council members and compliance with the city's code of conduct.
Councillors also received an update on the city's work to build a more inclusive, accessible and equitable Mississauga, and endorsed a separate update on efforts to improve health, access to services and quality of life across the city.
Waste collection transition
The waste collection decision is the most significant item for Peel residents, as it moves Mississauga closer to running its own curbside pickup. The city's plan focuses on ensuring residents see no disruption to their regular collection schedules once the transfer from the region takes effect in the fall of 2027.
The Region of Peel currently delivers waste collection to households in Brampton, Mississauga and Caledon. Mississauga's takeover of its own service would change who collects garbage, recycling and organics at the curb for city residents.
The city says a complete record of all resolutions passed at the meeting will be available in the council minutes, which are published after approval at the next scheduled council meeting.
Residents can watch live-streamed video of council, General Committee, Budget Committee, Planning & Development Committee, Audit Committee, Governance Committee and Committee of Adjustment meetings when they are in session. The city also posts meeting calendars and agendas online, and residents can subscribe to receive notifications when new agendas and minutes are uploaded.
