Mississauga Italfest returns to Celebration Square this weekend, bringing two days of Italian food, music and family entertainment to the heart of the city.
The free festival runs Friday, Aug. 21, from 5 p.m. to 11 p.m., and Saturday, Aug. 22, from noon to 11 p.m., at Mississauga Celebration Square, according to the Ontario Chronicle. Thousands of visitors are expected at the downtown site over the two days.
Now in its 15th year, the event has grown from a local gathering into one of Ontario's Top 100 Festivals, drawing attendees from across the province, other parts of Canada, the United States and Italy.
A festival built on tradition
Italfest was established in 2012 by a group of Canadian Italians who wanted to keep Italian traditions alive and share them with the wider community. Organizers describe the festival as more than an event for the Italian-Canadian community, pointing to its role in sharing heritage with Mississauga's diverse population — an approach they credit with growing attendance since the move to Celebration Square.
This year's festivities are also tied to Ferragosto, the major summer holiday celebrated in Italy every August.
Visitors can expect authentic Italian dishes including fresh pasta, pizza, espresso and cannoli, along with food trucks, artisan vendors and more than 60 vendors across the festival grounds.
Music, games and hands-on fun
The Celebration Square stages will feature international artists, traditional Italian folk groups, heritage dancers and regional choirs. Canadian music legend Alfie Zappacosta is among the notable acts scheduled to perform.
The festival also offers plenty of ways to take part rather than just watch. The lineup includes cooking demonstrations, bocce tournaments, Italian card games, food-eating competitions for all ages, children's activities and a soccer challenge with sports-zone inflatables, where attendees can also learn how to play bocce.
A cultural pavilion will highlight Italian history and customs, while ceremonial marches featuring representatives from Italy's Bersaglieri forces and police will offer another connection to the country's past.
Awards and milestones
Over the years, Italfest has hosted a range of prominent performers from Italy and Canada. One standout moment came when young Canadian singer Roberta Battaglia appeared on the main stage before later showcasing her talent on America's Got Talent.
The festival also weathered the COVID-19 pandemic, holding a virtual version in 2021 that drew more than 40,000 online views. That effort earned an Achievement Award from Festivals and Events Ontario.
With food, music and activities celebrating la dolce vita, Italfest adds another weekend of summer programming to Mississauga's festival calendar. Admission is free, and the event runs rain or shine at Celebration Square, located beside the Central Library at 300 City Centre Dr.
