Families who want a spot in a popular swim class or summer camp will want to be ready next week. The City of Mississauga says resident registration for its spring recreation and culture programs and its summer camps opens on Tuesday, Feb. 17.

Here are the key dates and tips from the city's announcement on Wednesday, Feb. 11.

1. Start browsing now

Programs have been open for preview on Active Mississauga, the city's registration site, since Feb. 10. Residents can look through the listings and bookmark the ones they want so they can move quickly on registration day.

2. Feb. 17 is resident day

Registration for residents begins at 7 a.m. on Feb. 17, both online and in person at community centres.

3. Non-residents follow a week later

People who live outside Mississauga can register starting at 7 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 24.

4. Have payment ready

Online registration takes Visa or Mastercard, so the city suggests logging into your Active Mississauga account and having your card handy ahead of time. Those who sign up in person at a community centre can also pay with cash or debit.

5. Mark the start dates

Spring programs begin on Monday, March 30, and summer camps start on Monday, June 29. Registration for other summer programs will open later, in May.

6. Look past the usual classes

The city highlighted a few programs for this spring:

  • Aqua Yoga and Toning, for ages 15 and up, which combines yoga postures with water-based strength work.

  • Children in Motion, for children ages six to 13 with a learning, intellectual or physical disability, offered with Variety Village Ontario and ErinOak Kids. Support persons are welcome.

  • Jewellery Making Level 1, for adults 18 and older, using brass and copper.

  • Musical Theatre for ages seven to 10 and 11 to 16, ending with a showcase for family and friends.

  • Swimming lessons and aquatics programs for all skill levels ahead of summer.

Older adults 65 and up can use the free 65+ Fit membership, and the city also runs adapted programs for people of all abilities and a virtual fitness membership for those who prefer to work out at home. The city says its children's programs are HIGH FIVE accredited, a quality standard for recreation and sport programs.
