The City of Pickering will hold a community safety meeting later this month focused on naloxone and opioid response, offering residents a chance to hear from harm-reduction workers and take part in hands-on training.
The meeting is scheduled for Wednesday, October 21 at the CHDRC, in the O'Brien Rooms. It has been organized in partnership with a local youth advocate, according to the city's Let's Talk Pickering page.
What to expect
The event, billed as a Community Safety Meeting: Naloxone & Opioid Response, will feature a panel discussion with harm reduction workers from three Durham Region organizations: the John Howard Society of Durham Region, Durham Community Health Centre and the AIDS Committee of Durham Region.
Attendees will also receive naloxone training. The session is designed to teach people how to recognize the signs of opioid poisoning and how to respond when someone is overdosing.
Naloxone is a medication that can temporarily reverse an opioid overdose, and free training sessions like this one are a common part of community harm-reduction programs across Ontario.
How to register
Registration for the meeting is available online at LetsTalkPickering.ca/CSWB.
The meeting is part of the city's broader community safety and well-being work, which is hosted on the Let's Talk Pickering platform the municipality uses to share information and gather input from residents.
