Barrie's south end has a new around-the-clock place to work out.
Planet Fitness held a grand opening celebration this past weekend for its new location at 35 Mapleview Dr. W., marking the fitness chain's second club in the city, BarrieToday reported.
The 17,000-square-foot facility opened its doors to the public in December, but the official ribbon-cutting took place over the weekend. The celebration included club tours and baked goods for those who stopped by.
What's inside
Staff used the event to show off the club's cardio and strength equipment, flat-screen televisions and locker rooms with day lockers and showers.
Like other Planet Fitness locations, the Mapleview Drive West club will be open and staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week — a selling point for residents trying to keep new year's fitness resolutions on track.
We're proud to expand our presence in Barrie with our second Planet Fitness location which allows us to provide even more residents with an accessible and non-intimidating space to prioritize their health and well-being as new goals are set for the new year,
That's from Chrissy Hubbs, regional vice-president at Taymax Group, a Planet Fitness franchise, speaking to BarrieToday.
Our clubs are designed for all fitness levels, whether they're just beginning their fitness journey or continuing an active lifestyle,
Hubbs added that the gym is meant to serve everyone from first-timers to longtime athletes.
A 'landmark year' ahead
The company is calling 2026 a "landmark year" for the brand in Canada. Planet Fitness has announced a three-year partnership with Hockey Canada, which the company says will let its facilities connect with the country's hockey culture while promoting safe and welcoming communities through fitness and physical activity.
For south-end residents, the new club means a full-service gym option closer to home, with no set hours to plan around — whether that's an early-morning treadmill run or a late-night weights session.
