Wet commute expected Wednesday
Southern Ontario drivers should brace for a wet and potentially slow Wednesday morning commute, according to The Weather Network.
A slow-moving cold front making its way across the province will bring showers overnight Tuesday into Wednesday, reaching from cottage country and the Lake Huron shoreline through London, the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA) and the Ottawa Valley by Wednesday morning.
Afternoon thunderstorm risk
The Weather Network forecasts a thunderstorm risk developing in the afternoon, with storm energy building across south-southwestern Ontario.
Isolated storms forming in Michigan could track toward Windsor, Chatham and Sarnia by late afternoon and evening, potentially bringing heavy downpours, strong winds and hail.
Storms are expected to stay below severe warning criteria, though heavier bursts of rain could once again affect the afternoon commute.
What it means for the GTHA
For the Greater Toronto Area, an isolated thunderstorm is possible, though forecasters say confidence in that scenario is currently low because of weak, trailing instability behind the front.
Heavier downpours could reduce visibility on roads, and drivers may face slowdowns during both the morning and afternoon commutes.
A drier end to the week
The wet weather will not last. High pressure is expected to move in behind the front, clearing out the clouds and bringing a drier, sunnier end to the work week across southern Ontario.
The break will be short-lived, however. Rainfall and thunderstorms are forecast to return by Saturday, and The Weather Network is advising anyone planning outdoor weekend activities to have backup plans ready.
