Mississauga was among the areas in the possible path of a severe thunderstorm that prompted a tornado warning on Saturday, July 18. The warning has since been lifted, Global News reported.

Environment Canada issued the alert at about 12:20 p.m. Eastern time after meteorologists identified a storm that could be producing a tornado.

At the time of the warning, the storm was just east of Milton and travelling southeast at 40 km/h. The areas identified along its possible route included Milton, Mississauga and Oakville.

The alert concerned a possible tornado associated with the thunderstorm. The storm’s location and direction of travel were those reported when Environment Canada issued the warning.

Environment Canada’s warning urged people facing threatening weather to seek shelter without delay. It identified a basement, an interior room or another sturdy shelter as places to take cover, according to Global News.

For anyone unable to reach shelter, the warning advised lying in a low-lying spot and shielding their head against airborne debris. It also advised people to get out of the tornado’s path.

The alert included advice from Emergency Management Ontario to take shelter immediately if threatening weather approached. The warnings were brief and had been lifted by the time of Global News’ report.
