Brampton shoppers will have a new place to stock up on groceries and everyday essentials by 2027, when a Walmart Supercentre is expected to open inside Bramalea City Centre.
The roughly 140,000-square-foot store at 25 Peel Centre Drive will make Walmart a new anchor tenant at Brampton's largest shopping destination, according to a Walmart Canada announcement. The company said the move is meant to better serve customers in one of Canada's fastest-growing cities.
Walmart already has a long history in Brampton. The retailer has operated in the city since 1994, and the Bramalea City Centre location will be its sixth store here.
"We've been a part of the Brampton community since 1994 and we're excited to bring this new Supercentre – our sixth in the city – to Bramalea City Centre," said Shawn Fujiki, Senior Director, Real Estate, Walmart Canada.
Fujiki said the new store is part of a $6.5 billion investment in Canada that Walmart announced last year, an effort he said will bring the company's everyday low prices to more customers across the country.
The announcement was welcomed by mall management, which has been working to refresh the shopping centre's tenant lineup and visitor experience.
"We're excited to welcome Walmart Canada to Bramalea City Centre and further strengthen our offering for our customers and surrounding community," Andrew Butler, General Manager of Bramalea City Centre, said in the announcement. "The addition of a Walmart Supercentre will bring value and convenience while enhancing the overall shopping experience at the centre, especially for the families that make up the majority of our customers."
Bramalea City Centre is one of Canada's largest enclosed shopping malls, spanning about 1.5 million square feet of retail space with more than 300 stores and services. The property is owned and managed by Morguard Investments Limited.
Mall officials say the Walmart addition is part of a broader evolution at BCC, which has included refining its tenant mix and a recently completed multi-million-dollar renovation.
For Brampton residents, the new store would put a full-size Walmart Supercentre inside one of the city's busiest retail hubs, cutting out a separate trip for many shoppers in the Bramalea area who already visit the mall.
Walmart Canada operates 150 stores across Ontario and employs more than 45,000 associates in the province, the company said.
