The Durham Catholic District School Board, which operates Catholic schools in Ajax and across the region, hosted a three-day training program in Oshawa last week aimed at strengthening how educators and community professionals respond to threats of violence.
The Level One Violence Threat Risk Assessment Train-the-Trainer program ran from Oct. 21 to 23 at a site in Oshawa, according to a Durham Catholic District School Board news release. It was delivered in partnership with the Centre for Trauma Informed Practices.
The sessions drew education and community professionals from across Ontario as well as British Columbia. Those who took part completed the specialized certification required to become Level One VTRA trainers through CTIP.
What VTRA involves
Violence Threat Risk Assessment is described by the board as a collaborative, evidence-informed process used to identify and assess behaviours that may pose a risk of violence, while making sure appropriate supports and interventions are put in place for those involved.
The Train-the-Trainer model is designed to multiply that capacity. Participants leave with the knowledge and facilitation skills needed to deliver Level One VTRA training within their own school boards, organizations and communities.
Local impact
For Ajax families, the training means more staff within the local Catholic board and its partner agencies are equipped to recognize potential safety concerns early and to respond using a consistent, prevention-focused approach rather than reacting after a crisis.
The board said hosting the provincial session reflects its commitment to student well-being, prevention-focused practices and professional learning that supports positive outcomes for children and youth.
The partnership with CTIP also signals a shared dedication, the board said, to building the capacity of educators and community agencies to respond effectively to potential safety concerns while supporting the well-being of everyone involved.
The certification completed by participants is a requirement for anyone seeking to become a Level One VTRA trainer through the Centre for Trauma Informed Practices.
