The City of Mississauga is inviting residents to spend part of March celebrating women and girls, with a month of programs tied to International Women's Day on Sunday, March 8.

This year's global theme is Give To Gain, which the city describes as a focus on generosity and collaboration. The idea is that when people and organizations share their time, knowledge, resources or advocacy, they open more doors for women.

What's planned

The city announced the lineup on Tuesday. Activities on March 8 and through the month include:

  • film screenings and storytelling events about women's leadership and lived experiences

  • sports and recreation programs celebrating women and girls

  • visual presentations on notable women from Mississauga's history

  • free fitness and aquafitness classes led by women instructors

  • library programs on empowerment, creativity and family learning

  • a playlist of music by women artists played at city facilities and programs

The clock tower at the Civic Centre will also be lit purple on the evening of March 8.

Details on specific dates and locations are posted on the city's International Women's Day webpage at mississauga.ca/IWD.

Part of a broader strategy

The city tied the programs to Empowering Change, its equity, diversity and inclusion strategy for 2026 to 2031, which sets out policies, programs and partnerships meant to support belonging and opportunity for all residents.

International Women's Day is a powerful reminder that when we give our time, our voices, and our support, we all gain.

— Mayor Carolyn Parrish

In the city's announcement, Parrish said Mississauga is proud to celebrate women's achievements through programs that support women and girls and honour their leadership, and that working together can help build a city where every woman feels supported and valued.

International Women's Day is marked around the world each year to celebrate women's achievements and draw attention to the work still needed to reach gender equality.
