Anonymous tip line remains open during review

The Niagara Regional Police Service has suspended its use of Crime Stoppers following a reported cybersecurity incident involving the third-party platform used by Crime Stoppers organizations.

Some data related to Niagara was included in the breach, according to the Niagara Regional Police Service, which announced the precautionary suspension while it awaits further information about the scope and potential impact of the incident.

"The safety and security of Niagara residents who have interacted with Crime Stoppers remains a primary concern," the police service said in its statement.

Police emphasized that Crime Stoppers of Niagara operates independently of the force, even though the two organizations work closely together on community safety. The Crime Stoppers tip-management platform is not connected to NRPS internal systems, police said.

"We recognize the seriousness of this incident, particularly given the importance of protecting the anonymity and safety of individuals who provide information to assist police investigations," the statement read.

Where to send tips in the meantime

While the review is underway, NRPS will continue to receive information about crime and public safety concerns. Residents who wish to report information and remain anonymous are asked to call 289-248-1058.

In an emergency or where there is an immediate threat to public safety, police are reminding the public to call 9-1-1.

The police service said it recognizes the important role members of the public play in helping keep Niagara communities safe, and that people who come forward with information need to have confidence in the channels available to them.

"We are committed to carefully assessing the circumstances surrounding this incident before determining our next steps," the statement said.

It is not yet known how many Niagara residents are affected by the breach or what specific information was exposed. Police said they are awaiting further details before deciding whether to restore the Crime Stoppers partnership.

Crime Stoppers programs across Ontario allow residents to anonymously report information about crimes, and tips have historically been used to support investigations throughout Niagara Region, including in St. Catharines, Niagara Falls and Welland.
