Ontario has ordered that writs be issued for provincial byelections in three electoral districts: Scarborough Southwest, York-Simcoe and Hamilton East-Stoney Creek.
The byelections were made necessary by the resignations of Doly Begum, Caroline Mulroney and Neil Lumsden, the members for those districts, according to an Ontario order in council published by the province.
The order, made under section 9.1 of the Election Act, was issued by the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario on the recommendation of a minister and with the advice and concurrence of the Executive Council.
The move formally clears the way for voters in the three ridings to choose new representatives at Queen's Park. The order itself does not specify when the byelections will be held.
Scarborough Southwest sits within Toronto, while York-Simcoe stretches north of the city and Hamilton East-Stoney Creek covers part of the Hamilton area. All three seats are now vacant in the provincial legislature pending the votes.
