Markham voters now know exactly who is on the ballot this fall. Candidate registration for the 2026 Markham Municipal Election closed on Aug. 24, and City Clerk Kimberley Kitteringham has certified the full list of candidates for City Council and local school board trustee offices.
A total of 63 candidates were certified, according to a City of Markham news release. The complete list is available on the Elections Markham website.
Voters will head to the polls — or log on — from Oct. 16 to 26, choosing a Mayor, Regional Councillor, Ward Councillor and School Board Trustee. Online voting runs the full window, while in-person voting places will be open from Oct. 23 to 26. Voters can also request a special ballot at Elections Markham Headquarters at the Markham Civic Centre starting Sept. 28.
'Canada's longest-running remote online voting program'
Markham continues to modernize its municipal elections by breaking down barriers and making voting accessible to all voters. By delivering Canada's longest-running remote online voting program, Elections Markham is providing a secure and accessible option for voters to have their say in the upcoming election.
Kitteringham, who serves as the City's chief election official, shared those remarks in the City's announcement. Markham was the first Canadian city to offer online voting, and the city has maintained one of North America's longest-running remote online voting programs.
Check your voter registration
In early October, Elections Markham will mail a personalized voter information letter to everyone on the city's municipal voters' list. The letter explains when and how to cast a ballot.
If a letter hasn't arrived by Oct. 16, a voter may not be registered at their current address — or at all. Voters can check and update their registration online, at the Markham Civic Centre, or at any voting place during voting days.
Campaign donation rebate available
The City is also reminding residents about its contribution rebate program. Voters and permanent residents of Canada living in Markham who donate $50 or more to a City Council candidate can apply for a rebate from the City of Markham, though some conditions apply.
Elections Markham, an independent non-partisan division of the City, is responsible for delivering City Council and local school board elections, by-elections and referendums.
Residents are encouraged to learn about the candidates and local issues before voting this fall, and can find the latest election information at ElectionsMarkham.ca. Media inquiries can be directed to media@markham.ca.
