Mayor Mark Sutcliffe is reflecting on his first four years at City Hall as Ottawa's municipal election campaign begins to pick up steam ahead of the October 26 vote.
The incumbent mayor laid out his record and his pitch for another term in a sit-down interview released Thursday on No Talking Points, iPolitics' weekly political podcast. The conversation touches on many of the issues Ottawa voters will be weighing when they head to the polls this fall.
Among them: public transit, housing affordability, public safety and Sutcliffe's vision for a second term as mayor.
LRT, taxes and Lansdowne on the table
According to the episode description posted by iPolitics, Sutcliffe discusses negotiations to upload responsibility for the city's light rail transit system to the Ontario government, along with what he describes as the advantages of a partnership with Metrolinx.
The mayor also outlines his approach to property taxes during the interview, a topic that has drawn attention throughout his term as council balanced successive budgets. Housing affordability and development charges — another perennial flashpoint at City Hall — form another part of the discussion.
Lansdowne 2.0, the council-approved redevelopment of the Lansdowne Park site, also comes up. Sutcliffe walks through the thinking behind the decision, which has been one of the more debated files of his time in office.
The wide-ranging conversation also covers Sutcliffe's efforts to build relationships with the federal and provincial governments, the challenge of managing return-to-office trends and commuting infrastructure, and policing and public safety in the capital.
Near the end of the episode, the discussion turns to homelessness, mental health programs and the drug crisis, which the episode listing says Sutcliffe addresses through what is described as compassionate intervention.
A race taking shape
The interview lands with just over two months to go before election day on October 26, when Ottawa voters will choose their mayor and council for the next four years.
No Talking Points is hosted by Editor-in-Chief Marco Vigliotti and Publisher Brian Storseth, and features long-form conversations on Canadian politics and global affairs. The episode with Sutcliffe is billed as a bonus instalment of the show.
The full conversation is available on Apple and Spotify, with a video version on YouTube.
