Low-income seniors and low-income people living with disabilities in Toronto have until Monday, November 2 to apply for the City's Property Tax & Utility Relief programs.
The programs are intended to ease financial pressure on eligible property owners and help them keep their homes as housing-related costs rise, according to a City of Toronto news release issued August 4.
Four programs available
The City offers four relief options: the Property Tax Increase Cancellation Program, the Property Tax Increase Deferral Program, the Water Rebate Program and the Solid Waste Rebate Program.
The first two programs can cancel or postpone increases on a homeowner's property tax bill, while the rebate programs reduce water and solid waste charges.
Eligibility requirements vary by program and depend on factors such as age, income and disability status, the City said.
Online application with CRA verification
Eligible homeowners can apply online, where household income is verified securely through the Canada Revenue Agency. The City said this removes the need to gather and mail in income documents.
Property owners who prefer not to apply online can instead submit a paper application form by mail.
Full eligibility details and instructions for submitting any required documentation are available on the City's Property Tax & Utility Relief webpage, the City said.
The City said the programs reflect its commitment to supporting vulnerable residents, including seniors and people with disabilities who own homes in Toronto, as part of broader efforts to help people remain in their residences.
Toronto homeowners who believe they may qualify are encouraged to review the requirements and apply before the November 2 deadline.
