Valentine's Day falls on a Saturday this year, which leaves Mississauga couples, families and friends a full day to celebrate. This week the City of Mississauga and Visit Mississauga, the city's tourism agency, each put out lists of ideas, and many of them cost little or nothing.

A night out

The Dreamboats, the rock 'n' roll revival band that got its start in Mississauga, plays the Living Arts Centre at 8 p.m. on Feb. 14 with songs from the 1950s and '60s. The city says tickets were still available as of Monday. The Living Arts Centre is also serving a Valentine's buffet dinner before the show.

For dinner elsewhere, Visit Mississauga points to spots including Tamarind Modern Indian Bistro, Posta Italbar in Port Credit and Miga BBQ, and to afternoon tea for two at Rania's Cakes in Port Credit. For a dinner on a budget, it also suggests a Valentine's Day dinner party at St. Martha and Mary's Church.

Bringing the kids

Families can start with a late breakfast, then head to Square One in the afternoon for the WonderPhil Valentine's Day Magic Show, which includes free face painting, Visit Mississauga says. Mississauga Library is hosting Valentine-themed arts and crafts for youth as part of Love Your Library month, which runs through February.

Free and outdoors

The city is encouraging people to get outside. Outdoor rinks across Mississauga are open for skating, and the city recommends the Lakeview winter walking trail, the waterfront and local parks for a walk. The Art Gallery of Mississauga downtown is another option for an afternoon out.

Skaters should stick to maintained rinks. The city warns that ice on ponds, creeks, rivers and the lake can break even when it looks thick, especially as temperatures change.

Friends' night out, and gifts

For Galentine's plans, Visit Mississauga lists a Galentine's social at Arcadian Café and Lounge on Feb. 15 at 7 p.m. and a Galentine's luncheon at The Room on Feb. 21. There is also a 19-and-over singles night.

Anyone still looking for a gift can buy a city recreation gift card, which can be used for programs, fitness memberships and golf lessons.
