A man is dead after a shooting in Port Colborne on Thursday evening, and a 30-year-old suspect from the same city was arrested at the scene, Niagara Regional Police Service said.
Uniformed officers from the service's 6 District, which covers Port Colborne and Wainfleet, were called to a Fares Street address north of Rodney Street at about 6:35 p.m. on Oct. 8, 2026, according to Niagara Regional Police Service.
Officers arrived alongside Niagara Emergency Medical Services and found a man suffering from an injury consistent with a gunshot wound. He was taken to a local hospital, where he died of his injuries.
The scene was secured with help from the Emergency Task Unit, and the suspect — a 30-year-old Port Colborne man — was arrested there, police said. Detectives from the Homicide Unit have taken carriage of the investigation, and the scene remained held for processing by the Homicide and Forensic Services Units.
Police said the circumstances of the interaction between the victim and the suspect are still under investigation. However, detectives believe the shooting was an isolated incident and that there is no ongoing risk to public safety.
The victim's identity has not been released, pending notification of next of kin. The accused's name is also being withheld while police investigate charges.
