The TTC has finished the first major phase of work at its Russell Carhouse, a facility the transit agency calls critical to Toronto's streetcar network, and is preparing to launch a multi-year extension project that could run as late as 2030.

According to a TTC construction notice, the Russell Yard modernization project began in mid-2022 and was designed to prepare the yard for the next generation of streetcars while improving day-to-day operational efficiency. That phase of the work wrapped up in November 2025.

The next stage — a carhouse extension and modifications — is slated to begin as early as February 2026 and continue into 2030, though the TTC cautions that date is still to be confirmed.

The transit agency says further upgrades are planned so the facility can handle maintenance of the new streetcar fleet, calling the improvements a significant step toward modernizing the carhouse and ensuring it can meet future transit demands.

The TTC notes that schedules and timelines for the project are subject to change and depend on site conditions and construction progress. Some stages of the work may also be combined.

Residents with questions about the project can contact the TTC's community liaison officer, Tyrell Ramsay, at 647-473-9411 or by email at Tyrell.Ramsay@ttc.ca.

The construction notice states that the content and timeline were accurate at the time of publishing. The TTC has not said exactly when in 2030 the carhouse work is expected to be finished, and no updated completion date has been announced.
