Ottawa police have charged two drivers with stunt driving in separate traffic stops over the past two days, with both caught going well over twice the speed limit in 60 km/h zones.
The first stop happened on October 21, when officers with the East District Traffic Unit pulled over a vehicle travelling 116 km/h on Riverside Drive near Hunt Club Road, according to the Ottawa Police Service.
The 34-year-old male driver faces several Highway Traffic Act charges, including stunt driving, speeding, failing to surrender a driver's licence, having an obstructive window coating and failing to display two licence plates.
Licence suspended, vehicle impounded
Under Ontario's stunt driving rules, the driver's licence was suspended for 30 days and his vehicle was impounded for 14 days.
The second stop came the following morning. At about 10:50 a.m. on October 22, officers pulled over a vehicle travelling 131 km/h in a 60 km/h zone near Navan Road and Tenth Line Road.
The 45-year-old male driver was charged with stunt driving and speeding.
Police warn of fatal collisions
The charges come as Ottawa police say the city has seen a concerning number of recent fatal collisions on its roads.
The force is reminding drivers that excessive speed significantly raises the risk of serious injury or death, and urging motorists to slow down, obey posted speed limits and make responsible choices behind the wheel.
Police say road safety is everyone's responsibility.
