Closure now runs through November 2

Drivers and pedestrians in Pickering will face an extended detour downtown after the City prolonged a construction closure on Glenanna Road by roughly three weeks.

According to a City of Pickering notice, Glenanna Road is now scheduled to stay closed from Pickering Parkway to the south limit of The Esplanade South until Monday, November 2. The closure, which began Tuesday, October 13, affects both the roadway and the west sidewalk.

Why the road is closed

The work is being done to allow the Region of Durham to install a new sanitary sewer and watermain in the corridor. The City did not state how much of the project is complete or why the original timeline needed to be extended.

The stretch sits near the Pickering Civic Complex, meaning residents heading to City Hall, the Central Library or the recreation complex in the area should plan extra travel time over the next two weeks.

Detours in place for drivers and pedestrians

Both vehicle and pedestrian detours have been set up, according to the City's notice, and signage will be posted throughout the affected area. A service announcement with a map of the closure is available through the City's website.

Motorists are advised to follow posted detour routes rather than attempting to route around the barricades through nearby residential streets.

Who to contact

Residents with questions about the closure can reach the City's Engineering Services Department. Ajay Gnanaraj, an inspector with Development Services, can be contacted at 905.420.4660 ext. 2077, and Joe Mitschang, supervisor of Development Services, at ext. 2030. Both can also be reached by email through pickering.ca.

What's next

Barring further delays, the road and sidewalk are expected to reopen to all traffic on November 2. The City has not indicated whether any additional closures will be needed once the Regional infrastructure work is finished.

The City encourages residents to subscribe to its public notices at pickering.ca for updates on this and other construction projects.
