The Town of Caledon has bought a vacant property on Airport Road in Caledon East as part of efforts to refresh and beautify the village's downtown core.

According to a Town of Caledon news release, the parcel sits at the southwest corner of Airport Road and Emma Street, next to the Caledon Trailway. It measures close to half an acre, has been vacant for years, and was previously put to uses that included storage and parking.

The Caledon East Revitalization Task Force, a Town-led group made up of residents, staff and Council members, will help determine the best community use for the land.

"The renewal of downtown Caledon East has been a key priority for me since I joined Council in 2022," said Councillor Doug Maskell, who represents Ward 3 and sits on the Task Force, in the release. "This was a rare opportunity for the Town to secure land along a major road for resident and public use. Special thanks to Town staff, who worked diligently on this project, and to my Council peers for supporting this acquisition."

Regional Councillor Christina Early, who represents Wards 1, 2 and 3, said the purchase sends a message to the community.

"The property has been vacant since I moved to Caledon several decades ago," Early said in the release. "The purchase is a signal to residents and businesses that the Town is committed to revitalizing Caledon East and transforming it into a more attractive and livable village."

What happens next

The Task Force will provide input on possible future uses for the property, and Town Council will weigh any project needs during its 2026 budget deliberations.

The group works with Town staff and other stakeholders on a wide range of revitalization opportunities in Caledon East. Those include preserving the culture and history of the downtown, building economic vitality for small businesses, and advancing community projects and events, beautification work, tourism, wayfinding and visitor initiatives.

The purchase comes as Caledon continues to grow. The Town describes itself as home to nearly 80,000 residents and 4,000 businesses, and its strategic plan lists environmental leadership, community vitality and livability, enhanced transportation and mobility, and service excellence among its priorities.

Under provincial growth forecasts cited in the release, Caledon is preparing to become a city of 300,000 residents and 125,000 jobs by 2051.
