The York Catholic District School Board is encouraging families to make mathematics a bigger part of everyday life at home, with a new set of resources aimed at parents and guardians of high school students.
The board's Curriculum & Assessment Department has put together an online page of digital tools, practical tips and ideas designed to help secondary students build confidence, develop a positive attitude toward mathematics and feel comfortable taking on new challenges, according to the York Catholic District School Board.
The resources apply both at school and at home, and the board says the goal is to help students approach the subject without the anxiety that often surrounds it.
The board operates Catholic elementary and secondary schools across York Region, including in Markham and Thornhill, so the materials are available to families with children in local schools such as those in the Markham area.
The collection, titled Math Journey 9-12, is hosted online and can be explored by parents together with their children. The board describes it as a way to discover how math can be positive, engaging and meaningful in daily life.
The board does note one caveat: parents and guardians are responsible for reviewing all linked websites, tools and resources before use, to make sure they are appropriate for their child.
Families with secondary students who have been struggling with math, or who simply want to reinforce what is being taught in class, can access the page through the board's website.
