Election candidates in Pickering and across Durham can put their campaign signs to better use than the landfill once the votes are counted, the Region of Durham has announced.
The region's Sign Recycling Program gives candidates the option to recycle corrugated plastic election signs at no cost, according to the Region of Durham. The offer applies after the election wraps up, when lawn signs come down across the city.
How it works
Signs can be dropped off at any of Durham's three waste management facilities. Loads made up entirely of corrugated plastic campaign signs are accepted free of charge.
There's a catch, though. Candidates who show up with signs mixed in with other waste materials will have to pay the regular disposal fee, the region said.
Preparation is also required before delivery. Wooden stakes, wire mounts, nylon zip ties, metal rings and staples must all be removed from the signs before they're dropped off.
Reuse before recycling
For candidates thinking about running again, the region has a simpler suggestion: keep the signs. Candidates considering future campaigns are encouraged to store their signs for reuse rather than sending them to be recycled.
The region also reminds candidates that rules around temporary signs — where they can be placed and when they must come down — are set by local municipalities. Candidates in Pickering are encouraged to check with the city for guidance on sign placement and removal periods.
