Halton election results point to a change of mayor in three of the region's four municipalities after the October 26 vote, with Burlington the exception. Jeff Knoll led in Oakville, George Minakakis in Milton and Jason Brass in Halton Hills, while Marianne Meed Ward topped Burlington's mayoral contest.

The municipal reporting systems had all listed polls or tabulators returned in Oakville, Milton and Halton Hills; Burlington's election website also said all voting locations had reported. These were still published as unofficial results when checked on October 27, pending certification by the municipal clerks.

Council contests add another layer

In Burlington's Ward 2 city and regional councillor race, Sean Campbell led Gary Carr by 105 votes, 2,967 to 2,862. The city's feed also put Kelvin Galbraith first in Ward 1, Mark Carr in Ward 3, Olivia Duke in Ward 4, Alex Don in Ward 5 and Angelo Bentivegna in Ward 6.

Halton Hills' regional councillor contests were also competitive. Chantal Garneau led D'Arcy Keene by 167 votes in Wards 3 and 4, 5,716 to 5,549. Hillary Spurr led Alex Hilson in Wards 1 and 2, 2,894 to 2,576. These figures remain part of the unofficial count.

What the results establish

The defeats of incumbent mayors Burton, Krantz and Lawlor give Halton a substantial leadership change. The counts alone do not establish why residents voted as they did or guarantee what the incoming councils will approve.

Residents can use the linked municipal pages to check the full council and school-board ballots and subsequent certified declarations. Mayoral vote shares refer to votes in each mayoral contest, while turnout measures voter participation using each municipality's reported denominator; those figures describe different things.
