Dogs and cats at Mississauga Animal Services can be adopted for $25 during a two-week Adopt-a-athon that runs from Nov. 2 to 14, 2026, according to a City of Mississauga news release.
The reduced fee covers every dog and cat at the shelter. Adopters pay HST on top, plus any pet licence fees that apply to Mississauga residents.
The savings are substantial. Regular adoption fees are typically $280 plus HST for dogs and puppies, and up to $190 plus HST for cats and kittens.
Why the shelter is cutting fees
The city says the Adopt-a-thon is meant to help more shelter animals find homes before winter, a season when adoptions typically slow down.
The event is open to everyone — not just Mississauga residents — and no appointment is required, though the city cautions that wait times may vary. Adopters must be at least 18 years old.
What you get for $25
Every animal available for adoption has already received basic medical care, including vaccinations and spay or neuter surgery, according to the city. That can ease the initial costs of bringing a pet home.
Animals too young to be spayed or neutered at the time of adoption come with a voucher to have the procedure done later.
First-time pet owners can ask shelter staff for guidance on training, food and exercise.
Hours and location
The shelter at 735 Central Parkway West will run the Adopt-a-thon Monday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., through Nov. 14. It is closed Sundays.
Prospective adopters can browse available pets online through the shelter's Petfinder listing before visiting.
A long-term commitment
The city is urging people to think carefully before adopting. Pets depend on their owners for daily care, exercise, attention and veterinary care throughout their lives, and potential adopters should weigh their lifestyle, time and finances first.
Can't adopt? Foster instead
For residents who can't adopt right now, the shelter is also looking for foster volunteers. Foster families provide a temporary home and daily care for animals waiting to be adopted.
Foster applicants must be at least 18 and complete an in-person interview. The shelter supplies everything needed, including food, bedding, toys and veterinary care. Placements can run from a few weeks to several months, which the city describes as a flexible way to help animals in need.
Foster applications can be submitted through the City of Mississauga's foster-a-pet webpage.
