Drivers heading through downtown Grimsby next week will face a new round of overnight closures as the Downtown Reimagined construction project moves into its next phase.

Starting Sunday, Nov. 1, at 8 p.m., the Main Street and Christie Street intersection will be closed nightly from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m., reopening each morning at 6 a.m., according to a Town of Grimsby news release. A night crew will use the closures to install hydrants and services in the intersection.

Cars will need to follow a designated night closure detour, and heavy trucks travelling between Mountain Road and the QEW must use the regional truck detour.

Watermain work moves up Christie Street

A day crew begins the final stretch of watermain installation on Monday, Nov. 2, at 6 a.m., working north on Christie Street up to the dead end of Elizabeth Street, past the parking lot entrance. The town is asking drivers to follow posted signage and traffic control.

Mountain Street will remain fully closed between Elm Street and Main Street, with the same detour in place. Once the Christie Street watermain is finished, crews will install the remaining sanitary laterals in that section. Cars should follow the designated route, shown in purple on the local traffic plan and on posted signage.

Commissioning underway

The new watermains are already being prepared for service. Swabbing — the first cleaning step, which pushes large sponges through the pipes with water to clear out debris and sediment — was carried out Thursday night.

Pressure testing, disinfection and water quality testing will continue next week.

The town said both construction crews worked overnight at the Main and Christie intersection this week, despite uncovering buried trolley tracks and additional Bell infrastructure. Crews have advanced to Forty Mile Creek and are now heading up Christie Street.

Downtown stays open

The town emphasized that downtown remains open for business throughout construction, with parking available through alternate routes.

GrimsBOO! 2026 drew more than 1,000 children trick-or-treating through downtown, and winners of the Construction Passport program have been announced and contacted by the Downtown Grimsby BIA.
