Residents and businesses on Sullivan Avenue will be without water Tuesday night as the City of Thorold's contractor completes a new watermain connection at Towpath Street.
The temporary shut-off is scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 27, from 9 p.m. to midnight, according to a City of Thorold notice.
The work is being carried out by Beam Excavating Ltd., a contractor hired by the city. Because many of the affected properties on Sullivan Avenue are commercial businesses or essential services in downtown Thorold, the shut-off was deliberately scheduled for late evening hours to reduce disruption.
What affected residents should do
The city is asking those affected to store an adequate supply of water in advance of the shut-off.
After water service is restored, some customers may notice discoloured water coming from their taps. The city says this is normal following work on a watermain.
To clear it, residents should run an exterior tap or a large indoor tap, such as a bathtub or laundry tub faucet, until the water runs clear. If the discolouration persists after several minutes of flushing, the city asks residents to call 905-227-6613, extension 266.
Part of larger reconstruction project
The shut-off is tied to a broader road reconstruction and watermain and sewer replacement project in the area. The city has posted further details on the Let's Talk Thorold project page, where residents can track updates and learn more about the work on Clairmont Street and Sullivan Avenue.
City Hall is located at 3540 Schmon Parkway in Thorold. Residents can also subscribe to the city's email alerts to stay informed about service interruptions, programs and emergency notices.
Anyone with questions about Tuesday's shut-off is encouraged to contact the City of Thorold before the work begins.
