Drivers heading through downtown Grimsby face a week of overnight closures as the Downtown Reimagined construction project moves into its next phase.
Mountain Street remains fully closed to through traffic between Elm Street and Main Street, and starting Sunday, Oct. 25 at 8 p.m., crews will shift to night work to prepare newly installed watermains for commissioning. Rolling lane closures will be in place overnight along Elm Street and Main Street, according to the Town of Grimsby's latest Downtown Reimagined dispatch.
Because both crews will be on nights this week, the town says there will be minimal activity during the day. Crews are expected to return to day shifts in the area the following week.
Intersection closures and detours
The Main Street and Christie Street intersection will be closed overnight from Monday, Oct. 26 through the rest of the week, shutting down between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. and reopening every morning at 6 a.m.
Cars are being directed to follow posted detour signage, while heavy trucks travelling between Mountain Road and the QEW are asked to follow the regional truck detour plan. Downtown businesses remain open throughout construction, with parking available through alternate routes.
Paving and commissioning
The watermain installation on Mountain Street between Elm Street and Main Street has moved ahead faster than anticipated, reaching the south side of the Main and Christie intersection. Crews have also made progress installing services along that stretch.
Paving on Main Street West, between Forty Mile Creek and Patton Street, is tentatively scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 29. Commissioning — the process of cleaning and testing the new watermains before they are connected to the existing live watermain — may begin this week, though the town is still waiting on confirmation from a sub-contractor before announcing timing.
Election Day is Monday
Grimsby voters go to the polls on Monday, Oct. 26, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. The town is reminding residents to visit their designated poll location based on the ward their property is in, and to bring identification showing their name and address. Voter Information Letters were mailed out earlier this month.
Fall events continue downtown
Despite the construction, downtown Grimsby has a busy fall schedule. GrimsBOO!, a free Halloween event presented by Civiconect, takes over downtown this Saturday, Oct. 24, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The Rotary Club of Grimsby's Grimsby Glows Pumpkin Parade follows at Coronation Park on Sunday, Nov. 1, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., with an accessible start at 4:45 p.m. Applications for floats, walking groups and volunteers for the Santa Claus Parade are now open at grimsby.ca/parade.
