Residents and businesses in Niagara Falls are being reminded of the strict rules around consumer fireworks as Diwali approaches.
The City of Niagara Falls and the Niagara Falls Fire Department issued the reminder in a media release, urging everyone to follow the City's Fireworks By-law before celebrating the holiday.
What the by-law covers
The by-law regulates when, where and how fireworks can be sold and set off in the city. According to a City of Niagara Falls media release, the rules are in place to protect public safety and reduce the risk of fires, injuries and property damage.
The key message for residents: fireworks are not allowed in shared public spaces.
Our primary goal is ensuring everyone can celebrate safely, and that starts with keeping fireworks out of our shared public areas. Discharging fireworks in parks or on city streets is not only illegal, but it also poses a severe safety hazard to bystanders, property, and local wildlife. We want everyone to celebrate our holidays safely and stick to discharging fireworks during designated hours and on private property to protect our community.
A.J. Lunn, Public Education Officer with the Niagara Falls Fire Department, said in the release.
Rules for retailers
Businesses are also covered by the reminder. A valid permit issued by the Fire Chief is required to sell consumer fireworks in Niagara Falls.
Fireworks may only be sold during designated periods leading up to permitted holidays, and only from approved locations. Those include inspected permanent buildings or authorized enclosed trailers. Sales from tents, roadside stands and residential properties are prohibited.
Penalties for non-compliance
The City warns that failing to comply with the Fireworks By-law may result in fines and the seizure of fireworks.
Residents who want to know the designated hours for discharging fireworks, the full by-law, safety requirements or details on retail permits can find them on the City's Fireworks and Pyrotechnics webpage.
