The Town of Wasaga Beach is publishing Mayor Brian Smith's complete responses to a series of questions the Toronto Star asked him about the Destination Wasaga waterfront redevelopment — and using the exchange to launch a new public-information series called Behind the Headlines.
The town says the Star's questions covered many of the same issues residents have been raising: why redevelopment is needed, how the plan differs from earlier beachfront and master plans, who will pay for it, how public beach access and Piping Plover habitat will be protected, and what success should look like a decade from now.
Instead of leaving those answers in the newsroom, the town is posting them publicly and promising to do the same for future media inquiries, giving residents direct access to the information and context the mayor and town staff share with journalists.
"Transparency builds trust. We want residents to have direct access to the information and context we share with the media, so they can explore the issues, understand the decisions being made, and see the work underway to shape the future of Wasaga Beach."
Sandra Watts, the Town's general manager of external relations, said in a Town of Wasaga Beach news release.
What the first installment covers
According to the town, the first Behind the Headlines installment explains how Wasaga Beach developed differently from other Ontario communities, traces the history of the beachfront, and sets out the town's vision for a stronger four-season economy.
It also addresses provincial and private-sector investment, environmental stewardship, and how the community-shaped Destination Wasaga Master Plan will be funded and rolled out over time.
The provincial connection dates back to May 15, 2025, when Premier Doug Ford delivered remarks at the Building Destination Wasaga announcement. A CPAC episode listing describes the provincial commitment as a $38-million investment in Wasaga Beach tourism.
More material available online
Alongside the question-and-answer document, the town has posted the Destination Wasaga Master Plan news release and backgrounder, an explainer video, and wrap-up videos from both phases of public engagement on the project.
Residents can read the full set of questions and answers provided to the Toronto Star on the town's website, and can subscribe for updates on council business, programs, construction notices and upcoming events.
Election context
The launch comes days before the municipal election on Monday, Oct. 26, 2026. The town is encouraging residents to confirm they are registered to vote and to check advance voting dates, voting locations and how to cast a ballot.
The town describes Behind the Headlines as part of its ongoing commitment to transparency and public engagement around Destination Wasaga, the long-term plan to redevelop the beachfront into a year-round destination.
